While gum disease, or periodontitis, is asymptomatic in the initial stages, there are a number of risk factors to be aware of in order to catch the condition in its earliest stages. If you suffer from certain medical conditions or have a genetic predisposition to gum disease, you may be at higher risk. Additionally, smoking, certain medications, and poor oral health can increase the likelihood of developing gum disease.
You may require gum disease treatment if you are experiencing bleeding when you brush or floss, swelling or discoloration of your gums, or persistent bad breath. If you notice these symptoms, schedule an appointment with us at Skyline Dental Designs for periodontal care.
Periodontal scaling and root planing are nonsurgical processes in which we remove plaque and tartar that have built up below the gum line and can cause gum recession, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Patients who have these procedures can protect vulnerable teeth and prevent oral bacteria from spreading to other parts of the body, such as the heart and lungs. Scaling and root planing can also have aesthetic benefits, such as brightening some stains and treating bad breath, or halitosis.
Our goal is for you to achieve the best level of oral care possible when you come in for an appointment at Skyline Dental Designs.
Other periodontal services we offer include osseous surgery, which is a surgical treatment to treat periodontal disease and cosmetic periodontal treatment which can recontour gum tissue around a tooth or restoration.
Patients can also have a minor procedure known as a frenectomy to remove the tissue attachment (between the gums and lip) if it is too thick.
Regular dental exams and open communication can enable us to advise you on whether these types of procedures would be right for you.
We understand that on occasion a patient may need a more intensive treatment regimen to accommodate their needs. When we are treating more severe cases of gum recession, you may require a bone graft, which incorporates the rebuilding or replacing of the jawbone. Typically, patients have this procedure to support devices such as dental implants and other periodontal procedures.
We also offer crown lengthening which can reshape bone around a tooth in order to expose more tooth structure to support restorative and/or cosmetic periodontal treatments.
While these procedures can sound intimidating, rest assured our expert team will provide you with gentle and compassionate care to put you at ease.
